🧭 Conservation First, Adventure Always
In 2025, the Kenai River is closed to all king salmon fishing — including catch-and-release — for both the early and late runs. This decision, made by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), aims to protect the declining king salmon populations and ensure the sustainability of future fisheries.Alaska Fish and Game+1Alaska Fish and Game+1
But don’t worry — Alaska’s fishing season is still brimming with opportunities. From sockeye and silver salmon to trout, the Kenai and surrounding rivers offer plenty of action for anglers.
🐟 Why the Closure?
ADF&G’s emergency orders highlight concerning forecasts for 2025:
-
Early-Run Kings: Projected at 1,531 large fish, well below the optimum escapement goal of 3,900–6,600. Alaska Fish and Game+3Alaska Fish and Game+3Alaska Fish and Game+3
-
Late-Run Kings: Forecasted at 8,742 large fish, falling short of the recovery escapement goal of 14,250–30,000. Alaska Fish and Game
These closures are essential steps toward rebuilding the king salmon populations in the Kenai River.
