In 2025, the Kenai River is closed to all king salmon fishing — including catch-and-release — for both the early and late runs. 🐟 Why the Closure?

ADF&G’s emergency orders highlight concerning forecasts for 2025:​

• Late-Run Kings: Forecasted at 8,742 large fish, falling short of the recovery escapement goal of 14,250–30,000. ​Alaska Fish and Game

🎣 Alternative Fishing Opportunities

While king salmon are off-limits, the Kenai River and nearby waters still offer exceptional fishing experiences:​

• Sockeye Salmon: June 11 – August 15​

• Pink Salmon: August 1 – September 1 (even years)​

🛶 Kasilof River: A King Salmon Alternative

For those still eager to fish for king salmon, the Kasilof River remains open for hatchery king salmon:​

• Season: May 1 – August 15​

• Limits: Up to 2 hatchery kings per day (May 1 – June 30); 1 per day (July 1 – July 31)​

• Gear: Single-hook, unbaited, artificial lures only​

Note: Wild king salmon must be released immediately and cannot be removed from the water. ​
